During it’s life, Gustav Becker manufactured several million clocks. Junghans continued to manufacture clocks, but all clocks with Becker’s brand were discontinued. After the war, the factory of the Gustav Becker brand was relocated until it inevitably stopped production. It would run for 37 years until it merged with Junghans, of which blog #12 is dedicated to, this would last until World War II. In 1889, the trademark and production survived a consolidation of Freiburg clockmaking companies into the "United Freiburg Clock Manufacturing Company Inc., formerly Gustav Becker". Soon after this, in 1885m Gustav Becker passed away. Later the company would return to their roots due to declining sales, as competitors began to win over consumers. In 1875, production peaked with over 300,000 orders for their clocks. For over 10 years, these clocks would advance and the sales rose. He began to create clock cases for train stations with the new funds, and in 1860’s would begin to produce classical Gustav Becker clocks. After completing these orders, he was given a fortune by the Duke of Martibore, which would allow him to propel his business forwards exponentially. 2 years later, he would get large orders from the British Royal Mail, and the Silesian Telegraphy Centre. He won the best clock award at this fair, and this gave him the prestige to be able to attract quality workers. Many observers saw the amazing quality of his works. In 1852, Gustav Becker finally made a name for himself while attending the Silesian Clock Fair. In 1850, he would relocate for access to better opportunities. Becker opened his first factory in Silesia, and taught a few workers the trade, however due to limited manpower, he struggled to meet production standards. Later, in 1845, he moved back to Silesia, where he originally learned the art of clockmaking. This was not always the case though, Becker had the dedication to create something from nothing.īecker began to hone his clockmaking skills with German masters, due to Germany’s influence in the clock manufacturing world in that time period. Today these clocks are known for their workmanship and quality, and many collectors would pay more for a Gustav Becker clock than lesser-known brands that were in the same market. Becker’s determination and passion for the industry is what kept his company going through the challenges it had faced early into its life. Though the company had a slow start, it became known to consumers for its quality. Gustav Becker created a name for himself, and a brand that would outlive him.
